United States

A federal court sentenced Haji Bagcho, an Afghan drug kingpin, to life in prison for conspiring to sell heroin in the US and use the proceeds to fund the Taliban. His heroin transactions in over 20 countries had supported Taliban military activities in eastern Afghanistan as well as the Taliban governor for Nangarhar province.




Afghanistan

A suicide bomber killed two people in Balkh. Two suicide bombers killed only themselves in Uruzgan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south and a civilian in Paktia.

Syria

Syrian government forces appeared to be preparing another massacre, in the town of Haffa. UN observers attempting to reach the town were fired upon. Rebel forces tried to smuggle civilians out of the town. A UN report said the Syrian government was using children as human shields.


Yemen

The Yemeni military said it took control of the cities of Zinjibar, Jaar, and Rahowah; 20 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and four soldiers were killed. A Yemeni news outlet claimed AQAP released a statement confirming the withdrawal.






Tunisia

Angered by an art exhibition they say insulted Muslims, Salafi Islamists clashed with Tunisian police. The protests spread to a number of districts in the capital of Tunis; 86 people were arrested.


Somalia

Shabaab forces attacked pro-government militias in Qoqani. Shabaab arrested four people linked to the government and Ethiopian forces in El Bur. A pro-government militia in Dhusamareb beat and arrested two journalists.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb blamed the German government for the death of a hostage who was killed by the terror group during a raid on May 31. AQIM said Germany approved the raid by Nigerian security forces.
