Germany

Peter B., a leader of the Salafist movement in Frankfurt, was arrested by German authorities in Istanbul. The German national and Muslim convert had been in Pakistan’s Waziristan area for a year, then traveled to Iran and Turkey. He is accused of belonging to a terrorist group and recruiting fighters for jihad in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed 15 Taliban fighters during operations nationwide. The Taliban killed two security guards in Herat. The minister of higher education and two members of parliament survived an IED attack in Baghlan.


Yemen

An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula operative killed himself in a premature detonation at his workshop in Sana’a. A French aid worker who was kidnapped three months ago was freed.


Somalia

One person was killed in an IED attack in Mogadishu. Security forces detained 89 suspected Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu.






Mali

The Tuareg rebel group MNLA has dropped its bid for a separate state in the north. A spokesman for the al Qaeda-linked Ansar Dine says his group controls the three regions of the north. About 400 fighters from the Gandakoy tribal militia joined Ansar Dine. Islamists in Goundam detained and whipped some 90 protesters.




Cyprus

A Swedish man of Lebanese origin was arrested last week in Limossal. He had been taking photographs of Israeli interests, and possessed notes about Israeli aircraft. He is suspected of planning a terrorist attack against Israeli interests in Cyprus.


United States

Parviz Khaki, an Iranian citizen, and Zongcheng Yi, a resident of China, were indicted on conspiracy charges for attempting to provide Iran with US materials for gas centrifuges used in enriching uranium. Yi remains at large but Khaki was detained in the Philippines in May.
