Mali

Hicham Bilal, emir of the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO) in Gao, surrendered to the Niger government. Bilal called MUJAO members “madmen” and accused them of racism and drug smuggling. ECOWAS approved a plan to deploy 3,300 soldiers to retake northern Mali from Islamist groups.


Germany

Jihadist rapper Denis Mamdou Cuspert, a.k.a. United Kingdom

Radical cleric Abu Qatada, who was instrumental in promulgating suicide attacks as a terrorist strategy, was released from prison to his home in London. The government plans to continue legal proceedings seeking his extradition to Jordan, which have already cost taxpayers £1 million and gone on for 10 years.


Afghanistan

Twenty-three Taliban fighters and an Afghan soldier were killed in fighting in Kapisa and Wardak, and a suicide bomber was gunned down in Kunar. US drones reportedly killed three children in Logar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the east.





Iran

Iran launched a large air defense exercise. The exercise spanned Iran’s northeastern, eastern, and southeastern regions.


Israel

Israel continued its attacks on southern Gaza, targeting smuggling tunnels near the city of Rafah. Palestinians responded with rocket attacks that hit the Negev and Ashkelon region.


Syria

Government aircraft bombed a rebel-held town very near the Turkish frontier. In the Golan Heights, Israeli tanks scored “direct hits” on Syrian artillery units after Syrian mortar shells fell near an Israeli army post.

Radical Islamic cleric Abu Qatada won an appeal against his deportation to Jordan; the UK’s Special Immigration Appeals Commission said deportation carried a risk that Jordan would use information obtained through torture of other persons against Abu Qatada. He will be released from prison tomorrow; the government plans to appeal.
