Yemen

US drones killed Sheikh Abu Zubeir ‘Adil al’Abab, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s senior sharia official, in a strike on Oct. 4. Security forces seized a parcel in Sana’a that contained explosives and bomb-making material.


Somalia

Several people were killed in an IED attack in Baidoa. A civilian was gunned down in Kismayo. Twenty people were wounded in a bombing at a wedding in Mogadishu.


Nigeria

Boko Haram fighters reportedly killed 23 people in a series of attacks in the northeastern city of Potiskum. Several buildings were also destroyed in the fighting.


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

A letter purportedly written by al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb emir Abdelmalek Droukdel indicates that the organization is fractured and disorganized. “The organization is sick,” Droukdel’s letter supposedly said.



Israel

Israeli troops boarded a ship that tried to break through Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip. The pro-Palestinian activists aboard did not resist. The ship was diverted to an Israeli port.

Lebanon

A huge car bomb exploded in central Beirut, killing eight people and injuring 78. Wissam al Hassan, chief of the information branch of Lebanon’s internal security service, was killed. Hassan had led the investigation that implicated Syria and Hezbollah in the assassination of a former prime minister of Lebanon.
