Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula launched a complex suicide assault on an Army brigade headquarters in Shaqra. Fourteen soldiers, including three colonels, and 12 AQAP fighters were killed during the attack.


Egypt

Saad el-Katatny was elected leader of the Muslim Brotherhood party. Katatny belongs to the more conservative branch of the party. About 10,000 protesters from liberal groups rallied in Cairo demanding that the country’s constitution represent all factions of society.


Somalia

Puntland security forces seized weapons thought to have been shipped from Yemen that were destined for Shabaab. “Gunmen” killed a tribal elder in Kismayo. Shabaab claimed it assassinated an intelligence official in Mogadishu.



France

Leaked intelligence documents show that authorities reduced surveillance on Toulouse shooter Mohammed Merah after he was tagged a “privileged target” with links to extremists. Turkey tries pianist Fazil Say for insulting Islam




Afghanistan

The Taliban dismissed a report that Mullah Omar has died or is mentally ill. President Karzai said NATO can speed up the security transition. Two Taliban fighters died in a premature detonation. Anti-Taliban uprisings have been reported in Kabul province.


Yemen

US drones killed an al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader and eight fighters in a strike in Jaar in Abyan province. The leader of an anti-AQAP Popular Resistance Committees died in a car accident.





Israel

The US and Israel are preparing a major joint air defense exercise, the largest to date. The exercise will simulate a multifront missile attack against Israel.


Syria

Government forces continued air strikes against a strategically important town in northern Syria. Stalemated fighting continued in Aleppo. Iran and Turkey said they supported a ceasefire proposal brokered by the UN. Some 33,000 Syrians have died in the conflict and 340,000 have become refugees.






Treasury ‘further exposes’ Iran-al Qaeda relationship

The US Treasury Department has designated Adel Radi Saqr al Wahabi al Harbi, a “key member” of al Qaeda’s Iran-based network. Al Harbi serves as the deputy to Muhsin al Fadhli, who now leads al Qaeda’s presence in Iran. The US government has highlighted the Iran-al Qaeda relationship several times since July 2011.


Turkey

Celebrated Turkish pianist Fazil Say was charged with inciting hatred and insulting Muslim values for sending Twitter messages that mocked Islamic extremism; he faces trial in 2013. A government official claimed that Turkey is the only Muslim country with the potential to succeed in the defense industry.


Somalia

Government forces clashed amongst themselves in Lambar-konton. President Mohamud said that the war against Shabaab would continue. “Gunmen” killed a government official in Mogadishu.


Libya

The Libyan Army clashed with militia in the former the Qaddafi stronghold of Bani Walid. The army was attempting to arrest suspects in the murder of Omran Shaban and others wanted for crimes associated with the former regime.


Guinea

The government released a shipment of arms for Mali after inspection by ECOWAS. The munitions had been ordered by former Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure. Guinea expelled 26 Malians who are suspected of links to Islamist insurgents in Mali.
