Afghanistan

President Obama said the Taliban’s momentum has been broken. Taliban suicide bombers killed 10 civilians and two policemen in Wardak. The Taliban killed two US soldiers in Ghazni. An al Qaeda commander was killed on Aug. 3 in an airstrike in Kunar.


Iran

The IAEA said Iran has doubled its uranium enrichment capability yet continues to encounter problems. The Bushehr nuclear reactor reached full operating power. Iran secured support for its nuclear program from the Non Aligned Nations summit meeting.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two Shia clerics and two other Iraqis in attacks in Baghdad. The government claimed that casualties in insurgent attacks have halved from July to August.


Syria

Government forces repelled a large rebel attack on an air base near Aleppo. Rebels captured an air defense building in Idib. Fighting occurred in Aleppo, Damascus, and Homs. Rebels said they still controlled 60% of Aleppo.


Turkey

Turkey’s proposal for the creation of a humanitarian safe zone for civilians inside Syria received no support at the UN. Already about 80,000 Syrians have fled to Turkey. Turkey intends to continue to press its proposal at the UN and also with Russia and Iran.


Somalia

Shabaab posted pictures of Kenyan soldiers who were captured and killed near Kismayo; one of the soldiers was dragged through the streets as a crowd looked on. Kenyan warships shelled Kismayo. AMISOM denied a helicopter was shot down near Afmadow. Three Ethiopian soldiers were killed in an IED attack.




Egypt

Egypt broadened its offensive against militants in the Sinai Peninsula. Security forces captured a militant responsible for attacks last year on a police station and a bank in the Sinai Peninsula. President Morsi said Syria’s Assad regime must go.


Mali

Islamist fighters from the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, which with the al-Qaeda linked Ansar Dine already controls the northern half of the country, are advancing south and have seized the city of Douentza in central Mali. Secular rebels from the Gandakoy militia have surrendered.


Algeria

The Defense Ministry said that security forces in Algeria killed 10 al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb operatives during two raids. A commander known as Boubeker Zemmouri, and eight other fighters were killed in Jebel Djerrah; another fighter was killed in a nearby village.


Indonesia

The Detachment 88 antiterrorism force killed two Abu Sayyaf-linked militants during a shootout in Solo on Java and arrested another at a separate location. The militants had returned to Indonesia after two years of paramilitary training in the Philippines. One member of the elite police squad was killed in the shootout.
