US drones accidentally killed 13 Yemeni civilians in the Sept. 2 airstrike in Rada’a. The drones targeted a car transporting al Qaeda fighters but missed the intended target.


Turkey

Fighters from the Kurdistan Workers Party attacked checkpoints in Beytussebap near the border with Iraq and Syria, killing 10 members of Turkish security forces and injuring seven more. About 20 militants have been killed in the clash, which is ongoing. The militant group has increased its attacks since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict.


Egypt

For the first time on Egyptian state television, a woman wearing a head scarf presented the headline news, breaking a longstanding rule requiring secular dress. Debate arose over whether this was part of an effort by Egypt’s new president to encourage a more Islamic Egyptian society.

Somalia

Kenyan warships continue to shell Shabaab positions in and around Kismayo. Security forces are pursuing Shabaab remnants in Marka. Islamist cleric and Shabaab supporter Abubaker Shariff Ahmed was arrested and charged with inciting violence.


Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram fighters killed a policeman and two civilians, and burned down a police station and a church in New Marte. “Terrorists’ killed two civilians in Maiduguri.

Pakistan

Security forces killed nine Taliban fighters in Bajaur and seven more in South Waziristan. The Taliban killed three people in an attack on a US Consulate vehicle in Peshawar, attacked military convoys in North Waziristan, and bombed a CD shop in Mardan.


Afghanistan

The US has suspended the training of the Afghan Local Police due to the spike in green-on-blue attacks. The Taliban killed five border policemen in an IED attack in Nuristan and a district council member in Helmand. Insurgents killed two Iraqi soldiers in an IED attack in Tuz Khurmatu. Two more Iraqi policemen were killed in a bombing in Kirkuk.


Iran

Iran and North Korea have signed an agreement to cooperate in science and technology. Iran’s leader Ayatollah Khamenei said North Korea and Iran had “common enemies.”


Yemen

Khaled Batis, the mastermind of the 2002 attack on the Limburg oil tanker, was killed in a US drone strike on Aug. 31. The US killed five AQAP fighters in a drone strike in Rada’a.


Syria

Rebels set off two bombs inside the Syrian army’s General Staff headquarters in Damascus. Government aircraft entered Iraqi airspace to bomb rebel positions along the border. Large numbers of refugees have fled to Jordan. More than 5,000 Syrians died in August, the highest monthly number to date


Egypt

In a continued shakeup of its military, Egypt’s new defense minister retired 70 army generals as well as members of the former ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The move followed last month’s firing of the defense minister and army chief of staff.


Somalia

Heavy fighting has been reported in Afmadow as Shabaab forces again attacked Somali and Kenyan bases in the town. A Kenyan military spokesman said that three soldiers who disappeared during fighting in Miido have been found; it is unclear if they are alive or dead. Kenya

Said Abubaker Shariff Ahmed, a Shabaab-linked cleric who is wanted by the Kenyan government, claimed the police have formed a “hit squad targeting Muslim clerics and other Muslims perceived to be extremists.” Ahmed is accused of fomenting riots in Mombasa after Sheikh Rogo was killed.
