Islamist militants from the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in Africa killed an Algerian diplomat in northern Mali, in retribution for Algeria’s refusal to engage in a prisoner swap. The group said it would resist any attempts to retake the north of Mali, but that it would advance on Mali’s capital only if provoked by the Malian military.
