Islamist fighters from the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa, which with the al-Qaeda linked Ansar Dine already controls the northern half of the country, are advancing south and have seized the city of Douentza in central Mali. Secular rebels from the Gandakoy militia have surrendered.
