Turkey Retires All 40 Commanders Charged in Plot to Overthrow Government





IMU announces death of emir, names new leader

usman_adil.jpgThe al Qaeda-linked Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan has announced the death of its emir, Abu Usman Adil, in a drone strike in Pakistan in April, and named Usman Ghazi to replace him. Adil was responsible for ramping up the IMU’s activities in Afghanistan.



Spain

A Turkish man arrested at an apartment in Andalucia with explosives in his possession has been jailed, and two Chechen accomplices are being held pending further investigation. The Turk, who has been identified only as “CY,” is alleged to be an al Qaeda facilitator.







Germany

Prosecutors accused a German man, “Thomas U.,” of belonging to an Islamist terror group and assisting in an attack on a military base in Afghanistan in 2009. The suspected member of the German Taliban Mujahideen was also accused of recruiting fighters for jihad in Afghanistan. He was arrested in Turkey.




Afghanistan

Security forces killed “several insurgents” in an airstrike in Paktia. Eight Taliban fighters and two civilians were killed in clashes in Nuristan. Nineteen people were wounded in a bombing inside a mosque in Nangarhar.


Iraq

Thirty-four Iraqis were killed in a series of insurgent attacks throughout the country over the past two days. The targets included security forces, Awakening militiamen, government workers, and civilians.

Syria

Government forces shelled a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus, and attacked rebel positions in Aleppo, Damascus, and Hama. Protesters called for the death for President Assad. The UN general assembly condemned the Security Council and the Syrian government.


Egypt

Egypt’s President swore in his new government, which included members of the Muslim Brotherhood in key positions. Attacks on Christian Copts are in the rise. The Egyptian government requested the release of a top al Qaeda explosives expert from Guantanamo.


Somalia

Heavy fighting broke out in Afmadow after Shabaab forces attacked Kenyan troops at their bases in the town. Shabaab claimed it killed six Ugandan troops in an IED attack on an armored personnel carrier in Mogadishu.


Kenya

One person was killed in an apparent grenade attack outside a military airbase in the Eastleigh neighborhood in Nairobi. Eastleigh is a known haven for Shabaab.


Nigeria

A Boko Haram suicide bomber wounded several people in a failed attack outside of a mosque in Potiskum. The target of the attack was the senior traditional leader of Muslims in Yobe state.
