Iran

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei said that economic sanctions would not compel the country to halt its nuclear program. Iran increased the number of uranium enrichment centrifuges in operation. Iran’s nuclear facilities were hit by a computer virus.


Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq’s political front, the Islamic State of Iraq, claimed credit for the July 23 bombings and attacks that killed more than 100 people. The government has barred Chevron from operating in Iraq after it negotiated deals with the Kurdish Regional Government.


Syria

Rebel forces in Aleppo prepared for the coming battle as government forces sent armored reinforcements to the city. Rebel forces took control of a police station in central Aleppo. Turkey closed its borders with Syria to commercial traffic.



Yemen

An al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula bomb maker and two of his sons were killed in a premature detonation at their home. Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Yemen denied reports that a Saudi diplomat kidnapped by al Qaeda has been released.



Somalia

Ethiopian troops arrested two senior Somali police and military officers in Baidoa. Somali forces fought amongst themselves in Mogadishu. The UN said US drone operations over Somalia pose a threat to civilian flights.

Kenya

The High Court reversed a 2010 ban on the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC), a secessionist group that seeks to establish an independent state on Kenya’s coastline. The MRC spokesman called the court’s ruling a “Ramadan gift.” The MRC is said to be infiltrated by the al Qaeda-linked Shabaab, and is funded by wealthy Arab donors.


Bulgaria

Witnesses to last week’s suicide bombing in Burqas told investigators that the bomb was detonated remotely by a controller. Local media are reporting that the bomber came from Belgium and may have been Belgian.



Germany

Four members of a German al Qaeda cell headed by Abdeladim El-K., a Moroccan who had trained in Pakistan in 2010, went on trial. The cell was involved in a plot to conduct Mumbai-type attacks in Europe that had been approved by Osama bin Laden.




Afghanistan

The Taliban killed seven children in an IED blast in Ghor, an American and two Afghan engineers in Bamiyan, and an ISAF soldier in the east. A police commander and 15 policemen in Farah defected to the Taliban. Security forces killed an IMU leader in Kunduz.




Yemen

Yemeni warplanes killed five al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in airstrikes in the Al Mahfad area in Abyan province. AQAP is said to have regrouped in Al Mahfad after losing control of several areas in Abyan and Shabwa.


Nigeria

The leader of the Middle Belt Youths Focus warned that it would retaliate if Boko Haram and allied Muslim herdsmen continue to attack Christians. The Joint Military Task Force ended operations in Jos that sought to root out those conducting attacks in the region.



Tajikistan

Government troops launched an operation in Gorno-Badakhshan province against forces led by former warlord Tolib Ayombekov, in retaliation for the killing of an intelligence official. The clashes have killed 30 militants and as many as 20 government troops, including a special forces commander.
