Fighting intensified in Aleppo as both the rebels and the government massed their forces around the city. A senior defector from the Assad regime offered to unite opposition factions and provide a road map for the transfer of power. Iran said it would stand by its ally.
Turkey said it would not tolerate an autonomous Kurdish region in northern Syria. The statement came after Kurdish groups began to take control of towns from retreating Syrian government forces.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula attacked local militias in Jaar; two AQAP fighters were reported killed during the attack. President Hadi ordered the military to send reinforcements to Abyan province.
Three policemen and three civilians were wounded in an IED attack inside of the Dadaab refugee camp near the Somali border. The attackers targeted a police vehicle guarding aid workers.
Suspected Boko Haram fighters in Maiduguri attacked a government office, a police station, and a factory. Two Indians at the factory were killed, and one more was wounded. Another civilian and at least two policemen were also killed in the attacks.
A court freed an Uzbek couple suspected of aiding in the attempted murder of an Uzbek imam who is wanted by Uzbekistan on terrorism charges. The court found the evidence insufficient and the investigation faulty.
