Afghanistan

ISAF confirmed that a Saudi al Qaeda leader named Hanzallah and several fighters were killed in the July 1 strike in Kunar. The Afghan military claimed 82 Taliban fighters were killed during operations.







Iraq

Insurgents killed 36 Iraqis in bombings in Diwaniyah, Karbala, and Taji. Security forces captured a senior al Qaeda leader in Ramadi.


Syria

President Assad expressed regret over shooting down a Turkish jet. Turkey scrambled fighter jets for a third day after Syrian helicopters flew near to the Turkey-Syrian border. Eighty-five Syrian soldiers defected to Turkey. A Human Rights Watch report said the Syrian intelligence agencies were running torture centers across the country.


Yemen

US drones killed four al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Shabwa. The military said it captured four Egyptians, two Jordanians, a Somali, a Tunisian, and a Dagestani during raids against AQAP. An intelligence officer was killed in a bombing in Sana’a.


Somalia

Gunmen killed a former deputy police chief in Puntland. A pro-government faction of the Ras Kamboni Brigade vowed to take Kismayo from Shabaab. Kenya said it would press the fight against Shabaab.




Syria continues to deteriorate

Violence within the country continues to rise, and tensions with Turkey have escalated dramatically since Syria shot down a Turkish jet. A new UN peace plan has little chance of success.



Algeria

The interior minister said that the military has killed 18 al Qaeda fighters in Tizi Ouzou province in the Kabylia region over the past two weeks. The minister said terror cells in the mountainous region are supported by local residents.


France

Police arrested a 35-year-old Tunisian suspected of financing and recruiting for al Qaeda, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, Fatah al Islam, and the Islamic State of Iraq. The suspect, a website administrator from the southern city of Toulon, was detained after a yearlong investigation.
