A Scottish jury found Glasgow resident Nasserdine Menni guilty of financing the December 2010 Stockholm suicide bombing. Menni used bank accounts under various names to send money to the bomber, provided him with a car, and also helped fund his trips abroad “for purposes of Jihad.”

United Kingdom

Shasta Khan, a thrice-married hairdresser, was jailed for eight years for her role in planning terror attacks on Jewish targets in Manchester. Her husband, Mohammed Sajid Kahn, pled guilty to related charges and must serve at least seven and a half years before he can be considered for parole.

Afghanistan

The Taliban killed a district police chief and five policemen in an IED attack in Uruzgan. Security forces killed a Haqqani Network leader in Khost, and detained several insurgents in Kunduz and Kandahar.


Yemen

The US is providing $112 million in military aid and training to Yemen this year. Iran denied Yemeni government officials’ claims that it was interfering in Yemen’s internal affairs.



Kenya

The Muslim Youth Council, a Shabaab affiliate in Kenya, continues to recruit fighters for jihad, according to the UN. A police official said Shabaab has threatened to conduct attacks in Nairobi during Ramadan.


Egypt

Two Egyptian soldiers traveling in Sheikh Zweid in the Sinai Peninsula were gunned down by Islamists. A security official said the attack was carried out by “jihadists who want to declare an Islamic emirate in the Sinai.”


Nigeria

Suspected Boko Haram gunmen killed two people at a market in Maiduguri. The government lifted a state of emergency that was imposed in four northern provinces affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.



Mali

Three European aid workers kidnapped last fall in Algeria and held by the al Qaeda-linked Movement for Oneness and Jihad in Mali were released after a ransom of $18 million was paid and two Islamist terrorists were freed. Imran Mahmood, Jahangir Alom, and Muslim convert Richard Dart were charged with terror offenses involving travel to Pakistan for training. Javed Baqa and Ruksana Begum, a woman, were charged with possession of material useful for terrorism.
