The Taliban killed five members of a policeman’s family in Faryab, a district police chief and two policemen in Logar, two civilians in Nangarhar, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed 11 Taliban fighters and detained 51 more. Ten insurgents reconciled in Herat. UNAMA is scaling back its operations.
The Yemeni military said it has regained full control of the city of Azzan in Shabwa province from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The terror group seized control of Azzan one year ago.
A court sentenced Jesse Curtis Morton, a Muslim convert who started the now-defunct Revolution Muslim website, to nearly 12 years in prison for issuing online threats against persons he considered to be enemies of Islam. Morton had corresponded with al Qaeda propagandist Samir Khan and posted al Qaeda’s magazine on the website.
Syria admitted it shot down a Turkish reconnaissance jet. Turkey said the jet may have strayed into Syrian airspace. Syria said the attack was an accident. Government and rebel forces fought in the town of Deir al-Zor near the Iraqi border. Iraq’s foreign minister warned that the Syrian conflict could spill over into neighboring states.
