Afghanistan

The Taliban killed five members of a policeman’s family in Faryab, a district police chief and two policemen in Logar, two civilians in Nangarhar, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed 11 Taliban fighters and detained 51 more. Ten insurgents reconciled in Herat. UNAMA is scaling back its operations.


Yemen

The Yemeni military said it has regained full control of the city of Azzan in Shabwa province from al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. The terror group seized control of Azzan one year ago.


United States

A court sentenced Jesse Curtis Morton, a Muslim convert who started the now-defunct Revolution Muslim website, to nearly 12 years in prison for issuing online threats against persons he considered to be enemies of Islam. Morton had corresponded with al Qaeda propagandist Samir Khan and posted al Qaeda’s magazine on the website.


Syria

Syria admitted it shot down a Turkish reconnaissance jet. Turkey said the jet may have strayed into Syrian airspace. Syria said the attack was an accident. Government and rebel forces fought in the town of Deir al-Zor near the Iraqi border. Iraq’s foreign minister warned that the Syrian conflict could spill over into neighboring states.


US seeks return to SE Asian bases


Israel

Two rockets hit southern Israel, prompting an Israeli airstrike into Gaza. Hamas and Israel agreed to a new ceasefire.


Somalia

Somali and African Union forces took control of El-ma’an, a port east of Mogadishu, and the Esaley Airstrip. Three Somali military commanders were wounded in a bombing in a cafe in Mogadishu.


Kenya

Police seized a bag of bombmaking materials, including 13 pounds of ammonium nitrate, dropped by three suspects who eluded capture in Nairobi. Yesterday the US warned that a terrorist attack in Kenya was imminent. Police arrested two Iranian nationals suspected of links to a terror network planning bombings in Nairobi and Mombasa.

United States

A State Department report notes that harassment of US official entities in Pakistan has “reached new levels of intensity” since the events of 2011. The report describes the harassment as “deliberate, willful and systematic” and says it included blocking shipments for both assistance programs and construction projects.


Afghanistan

A five-man Taliban suicide assault team took control of a lakeside hotel in Kabul for 12 hours; the five Taliban fighters and 18 Afghans were killed during the attack. The Taliban killed two ISAF soldiers in separate attacks in the south.
