Nigeria

The Joint Task Force killed nine Boko Haram fighters and detained two more during a clash in the town of Tudun Wada Dakadai in Kano state. Boko Haram fighters attacked a police station and a bank in the town.




Germany

A court sentenced Hussain S., a Syrian-born German resident, to five years in prison for publishing jihadist propaganda online. A key German-language propagandist for Islamic extremist groups, he promoted the efforts of al Qaeda, the Islamic Jihad Union, and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, among others.


France

Security forces shot and killed self-professed al Qaeda murderer Mohammed Merah after a 33-hour seige. Authorities in France, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the US are unclear about Merah’s past. An Internet posting by Jund al Khilafah claimed the killings at the Jewish school, but the post was quickly withdrawn.

The Taliban confirmed that three of Mullah Nazir’s deputies were killed in a March 13 drone strike in South Waziristan. The military killed five “militants” in Kurram.

The Taliban arrested two senior leaders in Ghazni for engaging the Afghan High Peace Council. The Taliban killed three children in Ghazni, and a policeman and a British soldier in Helmand.




Iraq

Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed credit for a series of bombings and attacks across the country on March 19 that killed 46 Iraqis. AQI said the target was the “fool government preparing” for next week’s Arab League summit in Baghdad.



Somalia

Shabaab claimed it killed a Somali intelligence official in Mogadishu and warned civilians to stay away from government buildings and AMISOM bases. Ethiopian forces and Shabaab fighters clashed in Baidoa.


Nigeria

Boko Haram said it would not participate in further talks with the government and that it would continue to wage jihad to establish sharia law in the country. “We have closed all possible doors for negotiation,” said spokesman Abu Qaqa.



France

In Toulouse, authorities are trying to arrest Mohamed Merah, a suspect in the killing of seven people. Merah admitted to police negotiators that he trained with al Qaeda in Pakistan and wanted to “avenge” Palestinians and punish the French military for its role in Afghanistan.
