Saudi, Qatari plans to arm Syrian rebels risk overtaking cautious approach favored by US


Syria

The Syrian military expanded its crackdown after eliminating the opposition in the Baba Amr district of Homs. China urged an end to violence but rejected any outside interference. Saudi Arabia said Syrians had a right to take up arms against the regime. US Senator McCain called for airstrikes.


Yemen

Al Qaeda militants serious threat as Yemen transitions away from Saleh


Yemen

The more than 60 Yemeni soldiers who were captured by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula yesterday have been taken to Jaar and are being forced to train AQAP fighters on heavy weaponry that was seized. Yemeni and US aircraft reportedly struck the AQAP camps.





Somalia

Shabaab fighters beheaded three young men who were accused of spying. The spokesman for the Kenyan military said his country would stay in Somalia until it is stable, but also indicated forces may be withdrawn by Oct. 31.


Nigeria

Three policemen were killed by “gunmen” in Kano, where Boko Haram has attacked security forces in the past. A senior US official said that the US will consider providing security assistance to Nigeria.

Afghanistan

The US has suspended talks on a long-term strategic partnership over a disagreement on the transfer of detainees. Afghanistan’s army chief said “there will be a lot of trouble” if another Koran-burning incident occurs. The governor of Kunar escaped an assassination attempt.


Yemen

AQAP overran a military base near Zinjibar and killed 185 troops and seized heavy weapons. AQAP claimed it captured more than 70 soldiers. Thirty-two AQAP fighters were reported to have been killed.



Libya

An Islamist mob desecrated graves at the Commonwealth WWII cemetery in Benghazi. Video of the incident shows armed men laughing as they shatter headstones and knock down a large cross. Libyan authorities offered an apology. The two-day attack desecrated the graves of more than 150 British soldiers.


Somalia

Shabaab said it captured the town of Diif on the border with Kenya and also said its “cartographers will soon redraw the geographical boundaries carved up by inebriated colonial masters in preparation for Islamic Khilaafa.” Shabaab and government forces clashed in the Karaan area of Mogadishu; the Somali government claimed it repelled the attacks.



Nigeria

“Gunmen” killed four people in attacks in Maiduguri. Boko Haram’s spokesman said the terror group “will launch a number of attacks, coordinated and part of the plan to eradicate Christians from certain parts of the country.”
