President Atambaev told a US State Department delegation that “no foreign troops” would be allowed to remain at Manas airport after 2014. The US currently pays Kyrgyzstan for the use of Manas as a transit point for American operations in Afghanistan.

Pakistan

The Lashkar-e-Islam killed nine members of a militia in an IED attack in Khyber. Thousands of Pakistanis attended a Defense of Pakistan Council rally in Rawalpindi. Lashkar-e-Taiba head Hafiz Saeed is one of the group’s leaders.


Afghanistan

Afghan policemen killed two Albanian soldiers in an ambush in Kandahar; one other ISAF soldier was wounded and 11 policemen were detained after the shooting. A policeman was killed in a suicide attack and four civilians were killed in an IED attack in Kandahar. Three ISAF soldiers were killed during an operation in the west.


Thailand

Thai police have named six suspects, including at least four Iranians, in the Bangkok bombing. Three are in custody.


Iran

Iran announced military exercises to protect its nuclear sites. UN nuclear inspectors arrived for further talks.


Syria

Iranian warships reached the Syrian port of Tartus. Syria’s military sent reinforcements toward Homs. China accused the West of provoking a civil war. The Red Cross attempted to negotiate a cease fire.


Somalia

Ten people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces on the road between Mogadishu and Afgoye. Kenyan warplanes struck Shabaab targets in the town of Xhwayo.


Kenya

A Kenyan court postponed the trial of Jermaine Grant, a Briton charged with planning attacks in Kenya. He escaped detention in a Shabaab jailbreak in 2008, and was arrested along with his wife and two other men in Mombasa last year.


Nigeria

Boko Haram killed more than 30 civilians, including women and children, in an attack on a market in Maiduguri. Security forces killed eight Boko Haram fighters in Maiduguri and detained five more in Suleja.

The Taliban killed four civilians in an IED attack in Kandahar. Security forces captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Khost and Kunduz.


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed 19 policemen and recruits in an attack at a police academy in Baghdad. Security forces detained more than 200 men on terrorism and criminal charges in Wasit.


Yemen

Security officials said a wanted Saudi known as Ghalib Salem al Seiri carried out a suicide attack last week. US Deputy National Security Advisor John Brennan said that Vice President Hadi is committed to fighting al Qaeda. A Houthi cleric called for his followers to support the Syrian regime as it fights “Jews and traitors.”
