Yemen

The military claimed it killed 12 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters in Zinjibar; two soldiers were also killed. A man killed himself while attempting to attack a voting center in Crater with a hand grenade.


Syria

The Syrian army continued shelling of Homs, “the heaviest in five days.” The Syrian army also attacked opponents in several other cities. Arab League members might start arming opponents. China said it would not protect any party, including the Syrian government.




Thailand

Three bombs exploded in downtown Bangkok. In one of the bombings, an Iranian man had both legs blown off when he attempted to throw the bomb at police. Israel accused Iran of being behind the attacks.



Somalia

Shabaab held rallies in several cities to celebrate its merger with al Qaeda. Burundian troops have advanced to within two miles of Afgoye.


Nigeria

Boko Haram claimed it killed 12 soldiers in Maiduguri on Sunday night; the military disputed the claim. One policeman is reported to have been killed in a bombing in Kaduna.


Sweden

Noting that Sweden is now at a ‘real risk’ for terror, a change from its ‘relatively low’ risk status four years ago, the government announced a new counterterrorism strategy. A Swedish man, Abdifateh Ahmed Mohamed, 30, was not allowed to travel to Mexico with two companions; Norwegian and US authorities suspected him of terrorism.


Afghanistan

The Taliban said Mullah Obaidullah, their former minister of defense, died in a Pakistani jail in 2010. The Taliban killed a British airman in Helmand. Security forces detained Taliban commanders in Helmand and Kandahar.
