Venezuela rejects US criticism of terrorism effort

Yemen

Five “Islamists” were killed in airstrikes in the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula-controlled city of Zinibar. The Yemeni government claimed opposition figures were behind the assassination attempt against President Saleh.


Somalia

Shabaab arrested 15 people in Afgoye for failing to fast during Ramadan. Eritrean President Issaias Afeworki denied reports that he supports Shabaab.












Pakistan

Five soldiers and six Taliban fighters were killed during fighting in Kurram. Police released a sketch of one of the men who kidnapped a US citizen in Lahore.




Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 24 civilians in a pair of bombings in Herat. Suicide bombers killed two security guards at a base in Paktia. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and HIG commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Ghazni, Logar, Nangarhar, and Faryab.


Iraq

Security forces killed four terrorists in Baghdad and detained 11 terrorists in Kirkuk and four insurgents in Mosul. Insurgents killed two policemen and three civilians in Anbar, Tarmiyah, and Mosul.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters took control of the coastal city of Sharqa in Abyan province. The Houthis accused the US of carrying out a car bombing that killed two people in Al Jawf.


Israel

Terrorists killed seven Israeli citizens in attacks along the Egyptian border. Israeli troops clashed with the gunmen after they shot up a bus and fired an anti-tank missile at a car. Officials said the terrorists infiltrated from Gaza via the Egyptian Sinai.


Algeria

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed credit for the Aug. 14 suicide bombing at a police station in Tizi Ouzou that wounded more then 30 Algerians. AQIM claimed 35 “apostates” were killed.
