“Gunmen” killed 29 Shia in Mastung. Eight “militants” and a solider were killed after Taliban fighters attacked a checkpoint in Arakzai. Security forces detained 15 Taliban fighters in South Waziristan.



Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber assassinated the head of the Afghan High Peace Council at his home in Kabul. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and IMU commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Paktia, Wardak, Nangarhar, Balk, and Kunduz.



Iraq

Prime Minister Maliki called for Syrian President Bashir al Assad to step down. Admiral Mullen said the number of US forces in Iraq will drop to 30,000 by the end of September. Insurgents killed a police colonel in Mosul.


Somalia

Human Rights Watch has written a letter to President Obama seeking clarification of reports that the CIA is involved in “detention, interrogation, and transfer operations in Somalia that may violate domestic and international law.” The Minister of Defense vowed to drive Shabaab from Mogadishu.



Spain

Police arrested a 24-year-old man suspected of belonging to al Qaeda. The man, who was not named, had 1,120 radical videos on the Internet, many which he produced. He managed jihadist websites that were used for indoctrination and recruitment.

The Taliban killed six policemen and a civilian in a suicide attack on the home of a senior police official in Karachi. Five civilians were killed in a bombing at a CD shop in Peshawar. The Taliban assassinated a tribal leader in Mohmand and torched three fuel tankers in Mastung.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed five policemen in a suicide attack in Jawzjan, a district counterterrorism chief in Kunduz, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Farah and Zabul.
