Afghanistan

The Taliban claimed it assassinated President Karzai’s brother in Kandahar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Paktia, Paktika, Wardak, Logar, Balkh, and Baghlan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the west.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two Awakening fighters in Baghdad and a soldier in Mosul. Security forces detained 21 wanted “terrorists” in Basrah.


Yemen

Five people were killed in an airstrike in the Arhab province north of Sana’a. Yemeni officials said they were tribesmen “harboring criminals who stand behind the attacks on soldiers,” while locals said those killed were civilians.



Syria

US Secretary of State Clinton said President Assad has “lost legitimacy” and the US has “absolutely nothing invested in him … remaining in power.” Syria said Clinton’s statement was “provocative.”



United States

Self-proclaimed Islamic radical Abdulhakim Mujahid Muhammad, a.k.a. Carlos Bledsoe from Tennessee, faces capital murder charges in Arkansas for killing one soldier and wounding another at a Little Rock recruiting station in 2009. He seeks to be tried on terror charges in federal court instead.
