Somalia

The African Union said four of its soldiers were killed by Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu. Ten people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and a pro-government militia in Gedo.



Saudi Arabia

A court in Jeddah has begun the trial of Haila Al Qusayyer, who is accused of finacning, recruiting, and fighting for al Qaeda. Qusayyer is known as Madam al Qaeda as she was married two of the terror group’s senior leaders.



Pakistan

The Taliban killed a pro-government tribal elder who was encouraging refugees to return to Tank. Security forces detained four Taliban fighters in Karachi.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 10 policemen and a civilian in a suicide attack in Helmand and an ISAF soldier in the east. Police killed a Taliban leader in Jawzjan. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Khost, Paktia, Laghman, Faryab, and Takhar.







Iraq

Insurgents assassinated the Director-General of Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research and killed his son in Baghdad. The Iraqi military wants to double the number of F-16s purchased from the US.


Somalia

The US added Shabaab leaders Omar Hammami and Hassan Mahat Omar to the list of designated terrorists. Shabaab claimed it killed a US military officer who was training African Union forces in Mogadishu.



Nigeria

President Goodluck Jonathan has created a panel to negotiate with Boko Haram, the radical Islamist terror group behind multiple attacks, including suicide bombings. The panel will also ensure that security forces are acting with “professionalism.”

Syria

Security forces killed 81 anti-regime protesters during an assault on the city of Hama. The military deployed tanks and artillery against civilians in the city, and have surrounded hospitals.
