Afghanistan

The Taliban killed six ISAF soldiers in the south and another in the east, and two brothers in a shooting at a mosque in Nangarhar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, and Zabul. President Karzai said he would not seek a third term as president.


Iraq

Insurgents killed three Iraqis in a pair of bombings in Ramadi and a member of the Sunni Endowment in Al Kut. Security forces detained six wanted men in Kirkuk.



Egypt

Ahmed Agiza, an Egyptian who was deported from Sweden in 2001, convicted in Egypt of links to al Qaeda, and sentenced to 15 years in jail, was released and is seeking to return to Sweden. Mohammed Alzery, another Egyptian who was arrested with Agiza and also deported, was freed earlier.


Lebanon

Two men were killed while attempting to plant a bomb on a car in a suburb north of Beirut. The car is owned by the son of a judge. No group has been linked to the blast.


Somalia

The overall commander of African Union forces in Somalia said more troops are needed to secure Mogadishu after Shabaab forces pulled out last weekend. Somali troops and Shabaab forces exchanged mortar fire in Afmadow.


Indonesia

Pakistan has extradited Jemaah Islamiyah operative and leader Umar Patek to Indonesia. Patek was involved in the Bali bombings and is said to have been in Abbottabad, Pakistan to meet with Osama bin Laden.

Afghanistan

US special operations forces killed the Taliban commander and the shooter who were responsible for last weekend’s downing of a helicopter in Wardak. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, and Faryab. The Taliban beheaded four Afghans in Farah and killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Pakistan

US Predators killed 21 “militants” in a strike near Miramshah in North Waziristan. Haqqani Network fighters as well as Arabs and Uzbeks were said to be among those killed.
