Iraq

US intelligence warned of strife after Iraq pullout


United States

Oytun Ayse Mihalik, a 39-year-old Turkish pharmacist, was indicted on charges of sending money to Pakistan to help finance attacks on US forces. Her arrest is “related to national security investigations in other areas of the United States.” She faces trial in February for making false statements to authorities.


Pakistan

The US released its findings on the cross-border clash that resulted in the deaths of 24 Pakistani troops in Mohmand. The military said it killed 16 Taliban fighters in Arakzai. The government admitted it does not control the military or the ISI.


Afghanistan

New Zealand’s elite commandos will pull out of Afghanistan in March. Afghanistan’s first rail link opened for service which should enhance the delivery of supplies to Coalition forces in Afghanistan. Gunmen assassinated a municipal councilman in Lashkar Gah.


Iran

Iran said its navy would hold war games beyond the Strait of Hormuz. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the US military was ready to engage in a conflict with Iran if necessary. Sanctions have impacted Iran’s trade ties with Arab Gulf states.


Syria

Arab League observers have arrived to monitor the implementation of a peace plan. More than 100 people were killed in an ‘organized massacre‘ on a Syrian village. A human rights group said 6200 have been killed since the uprising began.



France

France passes genocide bill, angry Turkey cuts ties



Iraq

Sixty-three Iraqis were killed in a suicide attack and a series of bombings in Baghdad. Two more Iraqis were killed in a bombing in Mosul.


Palestinian Territories

In the wake of the Arab Spring, Hamas took steps to reposition itself. Hamas is negotiating a deal to rejoin Fatah.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Yemeni security officials say a brother of Yemen’s al Qaeda leader was among five people killed in the latest of a series of battles. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Suspected al Qaeda fighters kidnapped a Mauritanian policeman near the border with Mali. The Jamat Tawhid wal Jihad fi Garbi Afriqqiya (Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa – MOJWA) has claimed it has split from al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.


Somalia

A possible rift among Shabaab fighters fractured the militia into smaller groups in the Bay and Bakool regions. Shabaab has threatened to kill at least two Somali Members of Parliament. Two Shabaab assassins were sent to Kenya to kill senior government officials.

Nigeria

A series of explosions followed by street battles took place in the northern cities of Maiduguri and Damaturu. Boko Haram fighters are believed to have detonated bombs in the cities and then attacked police checkpoints and other targets. No casualties have been reported.
