Lebanon

France’s foreign minister said he believes the bombing that injured five French UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon was carried out by Hezbollah at Syria’s urging. Telecommunications Minister Nicholas Sehnaoui said his group is not opposed to expanding Hezbollah’s telecommunication network as it is “essential in the confrontation with Israel.”


Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of five foreign nationals in two recent Mali terror attacks. But AQIM denied any involvement in the kidnapping of three aid workers from a Polisario-run refugee in Algeria.


Somalia

Fighter jets reportedly hit an Islamist militant stronghold in the heart of Bardhere town located in the Gedo region. Shabaab fighters fired anti-aircraft artillery at the fighter jets in response to the bombardment. Somali officials executed two convicted Shabaab fighters in Puntland.





Kenya

Twin blasts killed one police officer and wounded nine soldiers in northern Kenya. In a separate incident, nine soldiers were wounded by a roadside bomb as they moved between Wajir and Mandera. The Taliban killed six policemen and five tribal leaders in attacks throughout the country. Security forces captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Khost, Logar, and Nangarhar.





Lebanon

A roadside bomb wounded five French peacekeepers in southern Lebanon. Lebanese leaders condemned the attack on the French forces.


Israel

Fighting erupted in Gaza after Israeli air strikes killed four Palestinians on Thursday. Palestinian fighters responded with a barrage of rockets. Another Israeli air strike was followed by further rocket attacks on Friday. Palestinian factions discussed the possibility of a ceasefire.


Syria

The Syrian government issued an ultimatum to the people of Homs to end protests in 72 hours or face a new offensive. Philippines

A 14-year-old American boy who had been held hostage was released by his captors on Basilan island; he was kidnapped along with his mother and cousin five months ago. Abu Sayyaf is suspected in the kidnappings. Earlier this week, a 53-year-old Australian man was kidnapped from his home near Basilan.
