The Israeli president warned that an attack on Iran was becoming more likely. Russia warned against military action and France said such actions would be destabilizing.


Iraq

The governor of Anbar province dodged an assassination attempt in Abu Ghraib as he traveled to Baghdad. Kuwait denied it planned to host more troops as the US draws down in Iraq.


Yemen

Security forces killed six al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters and wounded several more during fighting in Zinjibar. An undisclosed number of Yemeni soldiers were wounded during the fighting.

Shabaab spokesman Sheikh Mohamud Ali Rage again threatened war with Kenya; Rage made the statement from a mosque in Daynile in Mogadishu. Two Shabaab fighters were killed during a clash with pirates in Harardhere.


Kenya

President Kibaki vowed to remain in southern Somalia until Shabaab is defeated. The Eritrean foreign ministry said Kenya’s accusations that Eritrea is arming Shabaab fighters in the south were “regrettable.”

Pakistan

The Taliban killed five Pakistani soldiers in Makeen in South Waziristan; unconfirmed reports claimed up to 15 soldiers were killed. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs denied a report that the country’s nuclear weapons are not secured.



Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed seven policemen, including a commander, at a mosque in Baghlan. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the west. Security forces captured a mid-level Taliban leader in Laghman.


Iraq

Insurgents killed 10 Iraqis in three bombings at the Shurja market in Baghdad. Insurgents also killed a civilian in a bombing in Sadr City.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed two Yemeni soldiers in Zinjibar. AQAP controls the the city despite numerous attempts by the military to eject them.


Kenya

Two people were killed in a grenade attack at a church in Garissa; Shabaab is suspected of carrying out the attack. Shabaab forces attacked a security forces base at a refugee camp in Hagardera.


Nigeria

Sixty-six people were killed during Friday’s attacks by Boko Haram in Maiduguri, Damaturu, and Potiskum. Sixty-three of those killed were in Damaturu. The US warned that the terror group may attack the Hilton, Nicon Luxury and Sheraton hotels in Abuja.
