The Kenyan military said Shabaab is no longer massing for attacks but is now using hit-and-run guerrilla tactics, including IEDs and ambushes. A large blast took place at a suspected Shabaab bomb factory in Hiran.


Kenya

Kenya is advocating the UN Security Council support its operation in southern Somalia. The military said it has “met its primary objective of creating a buffer zone [in Somalia] to secure the border of Kenya.”


Kazakhstan

An “Islamist militant” killed six people, including four security personnel, during attacks in the southern Kazakh city of Taraz. Jund al Khilafah, a group based on the Pakistan-Afghan border, vowed last week to continue attacks in Kazakhstan.



Pakistan

Five security officials and five militants were killed during fighting in Jhelum in Punjab province; one report said that the fighters were from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. The Taliban killed a policeman in a rocket attack in Shabqadar.

The Taliban killed six civilians in Laghman, two engineers in Faryab, a tribal leader in Nimroz, and an ISAF soldier in south. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Hizb-i-Islam Khalis commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Paktia, Nangarhar, and Bamyan.


Iraq

Security forces detained five al Qaeda fighters in Wasit and six armed men in Baqubah. Insurgents killed a police commander in Fallujah. The Kurdish government reached a tentative agreement with Baghdad on petroleum exploration.


Yemen

Security forces killed six al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters during clashes in Zinjibar. The defense minister said the government would “defend the country against subversive elements of the opposition and the dissident army.”


Iran

A massive explosion at a base in Bid Ganeh on the outskirts of Tehran killed 27 members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps. The blast is thought to have been an caused by an accident that occurred as ammunition was being moved.
