Iraq

Radical Cleric’s Path, Now at a Crossroads, Could Turn Iraq, Too







Afghanistan

The Taliban killed a police chief and eight officers in Ghazni, and two ISAF soldiers in the south. Afghan troops retook control of the Waygal district in Nuristan; 18 Taliban fighters were killed. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Zabul, Paktia, Nangarhar, Balk, and Baghlan.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a police general in Baghdad and a police officer in Mosul, and kidnapped three Bangladeshi women in Diyala. Security forces arrested four members of an assassination cell in Baghdad.





Syria

Iraq is calling for regime change in Syria. the European Union plans to impose new sanctions on Syria, including a ban on oil investments. Turkey is considering imposing sanctions and coordinating its efforts with the US.


Saudi Arabia

Mujab Mohammed Jamal al Qahtani, an al Qaeda operative who is on Saudi Arabia’s wanted list, is said to be negotiating his surrender. Qahtani “has called his family telling them of his decision and asking them for help to return home and hand himself over,” the Saudi government said.


Yemen

Four al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters were killed in airstrikes in Abyan. Fighting continues in Sana’a despite a truce. Mediation by the Gulf Cooperation Council has failed.


India

Tahawwur Rana wants new trial in Mumbai terror case




Somalia

Three soldiers were killed as Shabaab and government forces clashed in Mogadishu. Elements of Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a accused the government of attempting to split the militia.


Nigeria

The Niger Delta Liberation Force threatened to team up with security forces and attack Boko Haram if it moved into the Delta region. The FBI and Interpol are said to have joined the manhunt for UN headquarters bombing mastermind Mamman Nur.
