Pakistan

Foreign minister Khar said the US risked losing Pakistan as an ally if it continues to accuse the ISI of supporting terror groups. Four “militants” were killed in an IED attack in Khyber.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed five ISAF soldiers in the east and the west. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters Kandahar and Khost.


Yemen

President Saleh returned to Yemen after convalescing in Saudi Arabia for three months. The US State Department urged Saleh to step down.


Tunisia

Tunisian troops clashed with dozens of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb fighters who crossed the border from Algeria. Six AQIM fighters are believed to have been killed.



Morocco

Adel Othmani, the prime suspect in the Marrakesh bombing that killed 17 people in April, retracted his confession and told the court he was set up by the intelligence service. Othmani faces the death penalty if convicted.

Six people were killed and 61 more were wounded during three separate bomb blasts in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan. The blasts took place near the Interior Ministry building. Police killed one “militant” thought to be behind the bombings.

Admiral Mullen directly accused the ISI of supporting the Haqqani Network; Pakistan’s defense and interior ministers denied the charges. Pakistan placed the founder of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi under 10 days of house arrest. The Taliban killed five Pakistanis in Bajaur and two more in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Afghan intelligence said the Taliban’s Quetta Shura was behind the assassination of the chief of the High Peace Council. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and IMU commanders and fighters in Helmand, Khost, Wardak, and Kunduz.


Yemen

Nine people have been killed in mortar fire and sniper attacks in the capital of Sana’a. Fighting broke out between government forces and “unknown militants” in Al Houta, the provincial capital of Lahj.


Iran

Iran freed two US hikers jailed for spying. Venezuela and Cuba defended Iran’s right to run a nuclear program. The EU gave a blanket offer to resume Iran nuclear talks. US-based Iranian opposition groups said Iranians will take to the streets on Friday.


Nigeria

Boko Haram killed a lawyer and a government worker in an attack in Maiduguri. Police denied that 22 individuals arrested in Lagos are linked to Boko Haram.





Sweden

A Swedish paper reported that Swedish cartoonist Lars Viks was the target of the foiled murder plot at a Gothenburg art gallery on Sept. 11, for which four suspects were arrested. One suspect has been released but the other three remain in custody.


United Kingdom

A court released Habib Ahmed, 32, a member of a British al Qaeda cell who was sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2008 for plotting a “massacre” in Britain. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying notebooks written in invisible ink with contact data for key al Qaeda figures.

Admiral Mullen: Pakistani ISI sponsoring Haqqani attacks

During a Senate hearing today, Admiral Michael Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, highlighted the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence Agency’s role in sponsoring the Haqqani Network – including attacks on American forces in Afghanistan and the US Embassy in Kabul.
