United States

An appellate court ruled that US authorities had improperly seized the assets of an Islamic charity, the Al Haramain Islamic Foundation Oregon, even though the organization financed terror activity in Albania and Chechnya and one of its board members was a Treasury Department-designated terrorist.

Pakistan

The US said “the lines of communication with our Pakistani counterparts remain open” despite the ISI’s support of the Haqqani Network. Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in Arakzai and detained a commander in Karachi.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed seven civilians in an IED attack in Kandahar, a civilian in a suicide attack in Logar, and an ISAF soldier in an attack in the south. “Gunmen” killed a German citizen in Ghor. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Paktia and Balkh.


Israel

Abbas rejects peace blueprint proposed by mediators



Iraq

Insurgents killed two policemen in Fallujah and Baqubah, and a Foreign Ministry staffer in Baghdad. American Forces Network Iraq has stopped broadcasting in the country.



Somalia

One dead in blast at UN mine service in Somalia


Yemen

Government forces killed 17 people in an assault on a protest camp on the outskirts of the capital of Sana’a. Protesters said elements of the Republican Guard and Central Security forces were responsible for the attack.



Turkey

Turkey imposed an arms embargo on Syria and seized a Syrian ship. The United States has agreed in principle to deploy US Predator drones on Turkish soil to aid in the fight against Kurdish separatist rebels.




Bahrain

Bahrain held parliamentary by-elections for seats vacated by Shiites after protests. Police blocked protests ahead of election. King Hamad said Bahrain recognizes the “need for reforms.” The US envoy to Bahrain urged dialogue.



Syria

Turkey seizes Syrian ship with weapons – PM Erdogan


Syria

The EU banned investment in Syria’s oil sector. Syria banned imports except raw materials in a move to preserve foreign currency reserves. Turkey and the US have been exploring how to deal with a possible civil war among Syria’s Alawite, Druze, Christian, and Sunni sects. Syrian children have joined the protests.



Iran

President Ahmadinejad said Iran would stop producing enriched uranium if it is guaranteed fuel for a medical research reactor. At the same time, Tehran is holding talks with Russia about building another nuclear power plant. Iran’s nuclear efforts are hit by sabotage.
