Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two security guards in a suicide attack in Kandahar City and a local police chief in Marjah, and freed two Turkish engineers after eight months of captivity. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Kandahar, Khost, Wardak, Kapisa, Baghlan, and Balkh.


Iraq

The bodies of two more escaped prisoners from a jail in Mosul have been found. Insurgents killed a soldier in Mosul. The government is following up on a leaked diplomatic cable that claims US soldiers executed 10 civilians in 2006.


Iran

Almost 40 years in construction, the Bushehr nuclear power plant begins supplying electricity to the national grid. Iranian Revolutionary Guards forces launched a new offensive against Kurdish PAJK rebels in northwestern Iran.


Syria

“Gunmen” killed six Syrian soldiers and three civilians in an ambush on a bus near Hama. Security forces killed 12 civilians during raids in Idlib and Hama.

A suicide bomber killed himself in a premature detonation. An “Iranian sniper” killed an Iraqi civilian in Haj Omran. Ninewa police discovered the body of an escaped prisoner.


Yemen

A suicide bomber killed six Yemeni soldiers at a checkpoint in the southern port city of Aden. President Saleh’s son halted negotiations with the opposition and will not support a transition of power.


Somalia

Six people were killed as Somali security forces fought amongst themselves in Mogadishu. African Union soldiers accidentally shot and killed a Malaysian reporter in the Somali capital.

Libya

Rebels have surrounded the pro-Gaddafi towns of Sirte, Bani Walid, Jufra, and Sabha, and have given forces there one week to surrender. Libyan Islamic Fighting Group leader Abdul Hakim Belhaj played down his ties to al Qaeda and Islamists.


Ex-Gitmo detainee killed in Afghanistan

A former Guantanamo detainee named Sabar Lal Melma was shot by security forces in Afghanistan. According to ISAF, Melma was a “key affiliate of the al Qaeda network.” Melma was once a senior Afghan official in charge of border security in Kunar province. Leaked files allege that he allowed al Qaeda members to escape Afghanistan.
