Pakistan

Ten Taliban fighters and a soldier were killed during clashes in Arakzai. Pakistan closed the Chaman border crossing after a soldier was killed in a bomb blast. A US senator said the military may use manned bombers to attack the Haqqani Network in Pakistan.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two policewomen and a civilian in an IED attack in Herat. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Logar, and Balkh.

Saudi Arabia

The US Embassy warned Americans of a possible plot to kidnap Westerners in the capital of Riyadh. Citizens are urged to “exercise prudence and enhanced security awareness at all times.”


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed three Iraqis in Kirkuk. Insurgents killed five civilians in an attack on an Awakening headquarters in Fallujah. Security forces killed two insurgents as they attempted to plant an IED near Kirkuk.



Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters executed a man in public and chopped off the hand of another in Ja’ar. The military killed 15 AQAP fighters in Zinjibar.



Somalia

Ten people were killed during fighting between Shabaab and government forces near the city of Garbaharey in the Gedo region. Both sides have claimed victory after the fighting.




Algeria

Algerian security forces reportedly killed Adel Bourai, who served as the “treasurer” for al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. Bourai was killed along with six other AQIM fighters during an operation in the Kabylia mountains near Boumerdes.



United States

Abd al-Rahim Hussayn Muhammad al-Nashiri, a wealthy Saudi accused of planning the USS Cole bombing in 2000, will face a military tribunal at Guantanamo within 30 days. He is the first of the 33 Gitmo detainees the Obama administration plans to try in military court proceedings at the facility.


Norway

The foreign minister has invited representatives from Pakistan, Iran, and India, as well as the UN Security Council, to a series of meetings to discuss peace in the Afghan region. Norway has already held private peace talks with Afghanistan’s neighbors in meetings in Oslo, Dubai, and Istanbul.
