Sweden

Four Gothenburg residents arrested on Saturday had planned an attack with bombs and firearms, according to police. The men, all in their 20s, reportedly have links with Shabaab. Authorities have confirmed that three are Somalis: Kulan Mohamud Abel, Mahamud Abdi Aziz, and Mohamud Abdi Weli; and one, Mahmood Salar Sami, is an Iraqi.


Philippines

Security forces killed three Abu Sayyaf fighters during a clash in the village of Etub-Etubin Basilan province. The remaining members of the 20-man-strong unit under the command of Abdulbaki Ismanul fled on boats.

US Predators killed four “militants” in a strike on the Mir Ali area of North Waziristan. The Pakistani government placed an advertisement in US papers touting its war against al Qaeda.

Afghanistan

Yesterday’s suicide attack on a base in Wardak killed five Afghans and wounded 77 US troops. The Taliban killed five civilians in Kunduz and five more in Logar. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters in Kandahar and Logar.


Iraq

Security forces detained 24 wanted men during raids in Ninewa province. Muqtada al Sadr ordered his followers to halt attacks against US forces “until the invader forces complete their withdrawal.”


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula killed two soldiers in an IED attack in Zinjibar. The foreign minister met with the Pakistani ambassador and discussed Pakistan’s possible transfer of Osama bin Laden’s wife to Yemen.


Somalia

Fourteen people were killed during clashes between government forces and Shabaab fighters in El Waq. Shbaab took control of the district but later withdrew.
