Yemen

“Gunmen” thought to be associated with the Southern Movement killed three soldiers in an ambush in Aden. The government claimed tribal leaders have aided al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula with expanding its operations in Abyan. President Saleh may return to Yemen on July 17.


Iran

Senior al Qaeda leaders, including Saif al Adel, continue to use Iran as a sanctuary. A top Islamic Revolution Guards Corps official claimed Iran is behind the “Islamic Awakening” in the Middle East.











Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Nangarhar, and Kunduz. Pakistan

The Taliban denied it ambushed a military convoy and killed three soldiers in North Waziristian. Three people were killed during a clash between the Lashkar-e-Islam and a tribe in Khyber.


Syria

Syrian security forces killed 15 anti-regime protesters and arrested more than 200 in the city of Hama. Syria accused the US of inciting violence after the ambassador visited Hama on Friday.


Hezbollah

Interpol issued a notice for Lebanon to execute arrest warrants for four Hezbollah operatives indicted by the Special Tribunal for Lebanon for the assassination of former prime minister Rafiq Hariri. Among those indicted is Mustafa Badreddine, Hezbollah’s military commander.






Iraq

Insurgents killed two civilians in a shooting in Kirkuk and another civilian in a bombing in Al Kut. Security forces arrested eight wanted “terrorists” in Karbala.


Libya

President Gaddafi threatened to send hundreds of fighters to Europe to carry out attacks. “Hundreds of Libyans will martyr in Europe. I told you it is eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth,” he said.


Somalia

Shabaab ‘s former district commander of Dhobley was wounded while clashing with other Shabaab fighters. Shabaab is stopping people from leaving drought-affected regions and banned khat in the south.







Afghanistan

The police chief of Doab district in Nuristan was kidnapped in Laghman province. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban leaders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Zabul, and Wardak.


Pakistan

The military said 42 Taliban fighters and eight soldiers were killed during fighting in Kurram. Eighty-eight people have been killed during political clashes in Karachi.


Somalia

Senior Shabaab leader Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys called on Arab countries to help Somalis afflicted by the drought. Kenyan police arrested six Somali clerics at a refugee camp in Dhagahley.
