Syria

The military is deploying troops to Jisr al Shughour after the government claimed that more than 120 security personnel were killed there. Locals claim soldiers were killed during a mutiny by security forces sent to put down protests.


Egypt

The government has recognized the Muslim Brotherhood as a legal political party that is able to participate in upcoming parliamentary elections. The Muslim Brotherhood’s party is being called the Freedom and Justice Party.


Nigeria

Boko Haram killed five people in attacks on police stations in Maiduguri. Ibrahim Birkuti, a Wahhabi cleric who has been critical of Boko Haram for killing security personnel and political officials, was gunned down in the town of Bui in Borno state. Boko Haram is suspected of assassinating the cleric.









Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 11 Afghans in Logar, two police officers in Nimroz, and an ISAF soldier in the south; and kidnapped a teacher in Jawzjan. Twenty-three Taliban fighters in Badghis and 15 more in Kandahar reconciled with the government. Pakistan

US Predators killed 18 terrorists in three separate Predator strikes in South Waziristan. A Taliban suicide bomber killed 18 people in an attack at a bakery in Nowshera.


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed 12 Iraqis, including four Army officers and five soldiers, in an attack on the Presidential Palaces compound in Tikrit. Five US soldiers were killed in an attack in Baghdad.


Yemen

President Saleh underwent two surgeries in Saudi Arabia. “The first was to remove a piece of shrapnel from his chest, and the second was neurosurgery to his neck,” a family member said.


Syria

Security forces killed 31 people during anti-regime protests in Jisr al Shughour. The government claimed four policemen were also killed. Israel said Syria is orchestrating violence in the Golan that resulted in IDF forces killing 23 people.


Somalia

Shabaab forces in Mogadishu killed six Ugandan soldiers, including a colonel and a lieutenant. Eight people were killed during mortar attacks in Mogadishu.


Russia

One police officer was killed and two more were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in the Urus-Martan district of Chechnya. Russia’s deputy prime minister said radical Islamists who refuse to abide by the law should move to the Middle East.





US Predators strike 3 targets in South Waziristan

The strikes took place in areas controlled by Mullah Nazir. “Punjabi Taliban,” Arabs, and Uzbeks are said to be among those killed. Al Qaeda commander Ilyas Kashmiri is also reported to have been killed in the same area just four days ago.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed two bank guards in a suicide attack in Wardak, and killed an ISAF soldier in the south. Two ISAF soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in the east. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Kandahar, Zabul, Khost, Paktika, Logar, Kunduz, and Balkh.




Pakistan

Six people were killed in a bombing in the Matni area of Peshawar. Interior Minister Malik denied the existence of the Taliban’s Quetta Shura.
