Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Anwar al Awlaki, the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ideologue and leader, threatened to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden. “The martyrdom of Sheikh Osama does not mean that jihad will end.”


Yemen

Five soldiers and four civilians were killed in an IED attack that targeted a military vehicle near a bazaar in Zinjibar in Abyan province. The area is a known haven for al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Iraq

Nine Iraqis were killed in a car bombing in Baghdad. Insurgents killed three Iraqis in Karbala and a policeman in Baghdad. Security forces detained the chief adviser to the Salahadin provincial council.


Syria

Security forces have rounded up hundreds of anti-regime protesters and have charged them with “degrading the prestige of the state,” according to a human rights group. Nearly 3,000 Syrians have been arrested, but the number may be as high as 8,000.





Somalia

Eight people were killed after Shabaab forces ambushed a military convoy in Gedo. Shabaab leaders are at odds over whether to destroy two bridges to halt the advance of government forces in Bay and Bakool.


Afghanistan

Afghan troops killed and wounded more than 25 Taliban and foreign fighters in Nuristan. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand, Zabul, Khost, Nangarhar, Wardak, Logar, and Baghlan. A security guard was killed in an ISAF airstrike in Ghazni. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the east.


Iraq

Insurgents killed two civilians in Baghdad and a police chief in Ninewa. An Iraqi general denied reports in the Iranian press that Iraq was hosting Israeli warplanes to attack Iran.

The Republican Guard abandoned a base in Labus in Lahj province after clashes with the tribes for 10 days. The US embassy issued a warning to citizens in Yemen after Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan.


Somalia

Pro-government forces killed 26 Shabaab fighters in Garbaharey after Shabaab launched an attack on the town. Shabaab banned people in Jowhar from listening to news of Osama bin Laden’s death.
