Afghanistan

The Taliban killed seven policemen and an ISAF soldier in the south and east. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan fighters and commanders in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Paktia, Wardak, Logar, and Takhar. An ISAF helicopter crashed in Kapisa; Hizb-i-Islami claimed it shot the helo down.


Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed an anti-Taliban leader and five security personnel in Bajaur. General Kayani said that the “terrorists’ backbone has been broken” by Pakistani forces. Security forces killed six “militants” in Arakzai.


Iraq

Admiral Mullen said Iraq must decide in the next several weeks if it wants to extend the US military mission in Iraq. Insurgents killed two Iraqi civilians, a police colonel, and an intelligence officer in separate attacks in Baghdad.


Syria

Syria security forces killed 12 mourners in Duraa, Douma, and Barzeh, The mourners were attending funerals for some of the 82 people killed during protests on April 22.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and local tribes killed 20 security personnel in attacks and ambushes in Marib, Abyan, and Lahj. A Salafist cleric said it would be bad for Islam for a new government to support the fight against AQAP.


Libya

Three people were reported to have been killed in an airstrike that targeted a bunker in Tripoli. Pro-Gaddafi tribes are threatening to oust rebels holed up in Misrata.







Somalia

Fifteen people were killed during fighting between government forces and Shabaab in Mogadishu. Shabaab arrested nine volunteer doctors and nurses in the Lower Shabelle region.


Russia

Russian security forces killed Emir Muhannad, a Saudi commander who led the International Islamic Brigade and served as a key link to al Qaeda. Muhannad was also the deputy commander of forces in Chechnya.



Pakistan

US Predators killed 25 people in a strike in North Waziristan. The Taliban killed 16 security personnel after overrunning an outpost in Dir. Army helicopters killed 11 “militants” in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Special operations teams captured the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan’s top leader for Afghanistan during a raid in Kunduz. Security forces captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network fighters and commanders in Kandahar, Zabul, Khost, Paktika, Logar, Nangarhar, Badghis, and Faryab. Iraq has not requested an extension for US troops to remain in country. Security forces captured al Qaeda’s emir for Fallujah.
