Pakistan

Twenty Pakistanis were killed during a clash between the Lashkar-e-Islam and a tribe in the Tirah Valley in Khyber. Eleven troops were wounded in an IED attack in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Ten Afghans in Kandahar were killed in violent protests over a Koran burning in the US. US troops killed four Taliban suicide bombers in Kabul. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, HIG, and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Khost, Logar, Kunduz, Jawzjan, and Kunar.



Iraq

A suicide bomber killed an Iraqi Army colonel, a captain, and a soldier outside a mosque in Fallujah. Terrorists killed four soldiers and two policemen in an attack on a checkpoint in Ramadi. Insurgents killed an Awakening fighter in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Somali military officials claimed that 15 Shabaab fighters were killed in fighting in two districts south of Mogadishu. Military forces shelled a Shabaab-controlled town of Dhobley on the Kenyan border.


Saudi Arabia

Saudi officials said that 5,080 people have been convicted of terrorist charges. Another 2,215 people have had cases referred to a special terrorism court for prosecution.


Syria

Security forces killed four anti-government protesters in the Damascus suburb of Douma. Police later arrested 21 protesters in Daraa and Homs.


Libya

NATO aircraft accidentally killed 13 rebel fighters in airstrikes on the road between Brega and Ajdabiyah. Heavy fighting is taking place in Ajdabiyah and Brega; rebel forces are said to be retreating in Brega.


Ex-Gitmo detainee training Libyan rebels in Derna

A former Guantanamo detainee named Sufyan Ben Qumu is training Derna’s rebels. Declassified memos prepared at Gitmo note that Qumu was a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group’s military committee, trained at Osama bin Laden’s camps, worked for al Qaeda front companies, and was a known “extremist” with “no qualms about committing terrorist acts.”



Pakistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed a child in Darra Adam Khel. The Taliban killed three security guards at a supply terminal in Khyber used by NATO trucks. Lashkar-e-Islam leader Mangal Bagh survived an assassination attempt in Khyber.


Afghanistan

Five Nepalese security guards and three UN workers were killed after a mob overran a UN compound during a protest against the burning of a Koran in the US. Iran

Iran and Kuwait announced the resumption of bilateral ties. The Iran Mercantile Exchange expected to begin trading fuel-oil contracts this month. Tehran has been accused of political meddling in Azerbaijan.



Somalia

The Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya claimed that 10 Kenyans have died while fighting for Shabaab in Somalia. Shabaab’s spokesman said his forces would attack Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a in Galgudud. Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama’a arrested 10 people in Luq.


Libya

Fighting between pro-Gaddafi forces and rebels is underway in Brega and Misruta. A doctor claimed seven civilians were killed in UN airstrikes in the village of Zawia el Argobe. US Defense Secretary Gates said the US should not train rebel forces.


Syria

The International Atomic Energy Agency is inspecting a suspected nuclear facility in Homs in western Syria. Anti-government protests were held in Damascus, Latakia, and Banias.


Kuwait

The government will expel “a group of Iranian diplomats” for their alleged involvement with a spy ring in the Gulf country. Three members of the spy ring were serving in the Kuwaiti military and have been sentenced to death. Iran denies its diplomats are involved in spying.



Russia

Emir Supyan, the deputy emir of the Islamic Caucasus Emirate, was killed by Russian commandos during the March 28 raid in Inguishetia. A martyrdom statement announcing his arrest was released by Kavkaz Center.


Jemaah Islamiyah

Indonesia’s National Intelligence Agency confirmed that Pakistan arrested Jemaah Islamiyah commander and bomb maker Umar Patek, who is wanted for his involvement in the 2002 Bali bombings. Patek’s wife was also arrested by Pakistani security forces.
