China

China to increase defence spending by 12.7 per cent in 2011


Iraq

Security forces detained a Saudi al Qaeda operative in Mosul. The Saudi was captured with his passport and a suicide vest in his possession. A tribal leader in Baqubah escaped an assassination attempt.


Yemen

Three soldiers and two civilians were killed during clashes in Lahj. The military killed two civilians in the north. The Interior Minister said al Qaeda may attack in five southern provinces.


Iran

Iranian naval ships returned through the Suez Canal on route back to Iran. Iranians denied President Ahmadinejad’s claim that there is no hunger problem in Iran. Tehran agreed to negotiate with Somali pirates over the release of an Indian merchant ship.




Libya

Experts fear looted Libyan arms may find way to terrorists



Pakistan

A suicide bomber killed nine people, including four policemen, in Hangu. The Taliban killed six policemen in an ambush in Khyber. Police arrested 18 suspects in the assassination of Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti.







Russia

In a videotape released on jihadist websites, Islamic Caucasus Emirate leader Doku Umarov called for all Muslims in Russia to rise up and wage jihad. A court charged three people for their involvement in the Domodedovo airport suicide attack.


Afghanistan

President Karzai denounced US forces for the death of nine civilians in Kunar and said talks with the Taliban are underway. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Helmand and Kandahar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Iraq

An al Qaeda suicide bomber killed eight soldiers and two policemen in Haditha. Security forces captured a senior al Qaeda leader in Mosul and detained 24 wanted men in Basrah.


Libya

Rebel forces have pushed Gaddafi loyalists back to the oil terminal in Ras Lanuf. US Secretary of State Clinton said she is concerned Libya will become the next Somalia.


Somalia

Somali soldiers have used the Kenyan town of Mandera as a base to attack Shabaab in the south. Madagascar security forces captured a Somali pirate mothership. The government closed Radio-Kulmiye for interviewing disgruntled former Shabaab fighters.


Nigeria

Nigerian diplomats serving in Saudi Arabia said that large numbers of Nigerians are being trained at al Qaeda camps in Yemen. The diplomats said the collapse of the Yemeni government would pose a threat to Nigeria’s security.


Yemen

Opposition leaders said President Saleh is working on a plan to transition power in the next year. A pro-al Qaeda tribal leader has pledged support to anti-government protesters.
