Pakistan

Security forces killed six “militants” in Arakzai. Four people were killed in a rocket attack in Jaffarabad. The Taliban torched two NATO fuel trucks in Mach and bombed a mosque in Peshawar.


United States

The US Army reprimanded nine officers for failure to spot the radicalization of Major Nidal Hasan, the gunman who was influenced by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula ideologue Anwar al Awlaki to murder 13 fellow soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas.


Libya

The Arab League asked the Security Council to impose a no-fly zone over the country. The European Union has yet to promise military support for the rebel movement or declare it to be Libya’s legitimate representative. Gaddafi’s forces have recaptured Ras Lanuf; residents say foreigners are fighting with the rebels.


Iraq

Insurgents killed seven Iraqi soldiers in the Badush area west of Mosul, and a civilian in Baghdad. Security forces, backed by US troops, captured a Naqshabandiya leader in Kirkuk.


Somalia

Somalia’s prime minister warned that Shabaab may attempt to use oil tankers in a Sept. 11-styled attack. The United Nations Security Council urged the international community to increase funding for African Union forces in Somalia.


Yemen

Two people, including an influential tribal leader, were killed and hundreds more were wounded during clashes in Sana’a. The Interior Minister denied police killed the protesters and blamed “third parties.”


Scotland

A 30-year-old Kuwaiti named AK al Khalede is being questioned about possible links to the Dec. 11 Stockholm suicide bombing. UK authorities believe the man, a pre-nursing student in Glasgow, may have been involved in financing the attack.

Kashmir

Indian police in Srinagar said they killed the leader of Jaish-e-Mohammad in Kashmir and his bodyguard. The commander, Sajjad Afghani, was wanted for leading attacks in the disputed Idnian province.


Pakistan

US Predators killed five “militants” in a strike in Mir Ali in North Waziristan. The military successfully test fired a nuclear-capable missile.

US Defense Secretary Gates castigated NATO allies for pushing a withdrawal schedule. Security forces killed and captured several Taliban, Haqqani Network, and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commanders and fighters in Helmand, Ghazni, Khost, Nangarhar, Samangan, and Balkh.


Somalia

Pirates killed five Puntland troops during a failed attempt to free a captive Danish family. Twelve people were killed in fighting in Galgudud. Thirty Shabaab fighters in Mogadishu defected.


Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters killed four police in Hadramount. Security forces confirmed that two AQAP fighters were killed at a funeral in Sa’ada. Three protesters were wounded in Aden.
