Philippines

Soldiers killed five Abu Sayyaf fighters and overran their mountain camp in the town of Sumisip in Basilan. Two soldiers were also killed during a three-hour-long firefight with more than 30 Abu Sayyaf fighters.


Thailand

Eighteen Thai soldiers were wounded in an IED attack in the southern province of Yala. Muslim insurgents detonated a large bomb planted in a pickup truck as a patrol passed by. Several homes and shops were destroyed.

Three people were killed in a bombing in Mogadishu. Hundreds of Somalis held anti-Shabaab demonstrations in Mogadishu. A Danish warship captured a pirate mothership off the coast of Somalia.


Egypt

The military suspended the constitution, dissolved the parliament, and imposed military rule. The military will run the country for the next six months, or until elections are held.



Pakistan

A suicide bomber wounded three soldiers in Malakand. A court issued a warrant for former President Pervez Musharraf for involvement in the murder of Benazir Bhutto. The US demanded full immunity for a consular official detained after killing two people in Lahore.


Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide assault team killed 16 police officers and three civilians in an attack on a police headquarters in Kandahar. The Taliban kidnapped two policemen in Kunar. A senior Shabaab official said that primary and secondary schools in lower Shabelle province must teach “jihad.” Police displayed two captive Shabaab fighters to the media.


Iraq

A suicide bomber killed 31 Iraqis at a bombing that targeted Shia pilgrims at a cafe just north of Samarra. Police arrested 25 wanted men in Diyala.
