Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

The security director of Abyan province denied reports that Sa’id al Shihri, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s second in command, died while assembling a bomb. Saudi officials also denied Shihri is dead.


Yemen

Foreign Minister Qirbi said that the Yemeni government will not collapse due to protests as have the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia. The US ended its ban on air cargo from Yemen.

Israel

Israel has issued travel advisories for Egypt, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, and Venezuela, and has temporarily closed embassies in at least four of those countries. The increased vigilance coincides with the third anniversary of the death of Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh.



Iran

The US State Department supported Iranian protests in solidarity with Egypt and Tunisia. The Iranian parliament condemned the protests and instructed security forces to crack down. Russia announced that it will not support future sanctions against Iran.




Russia

A pair of suicide bombers killed a soldier and a policeman in a pair of attacks in the village of Gubden in Dagestan. A female suicide bomber killed a soldier outside a police station. Hours later a suicide bomber killed a policeman in an attack on a checkpoint.





Iran

Police fired teargas at protesters in Tehran and detained dozens during violent clashes. Protests were also held in Isfahan, Mashhad, and Shiraz. Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi was also placed under house arrest.

Afghanistan

A Taliban suicide bomber killed two security guards in an attack at a hotel in Kabul. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. ISAF troops detained several Taliban fighters in Kandahar while targeting a commander linked to al Qaeda. Two British troops died in a shooting on a base in Helmand.


The Taliban

The Taliban, via its propaganda arm, the Voice of Jihad, released a statement in support of the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The Taliban said Mubarak’s resignation signaled an end to US power and influence in the Middle East.


Iraq

An insurgent died in a premature detonation in Fallujah. Three wanted men surrendered to authorities in Baqubah. The government will delay the purchase of F-16s in order to boost food rations.


Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula

Anwar al Awlaki came out in support of Abdulelah Shaea, a Yemeni “journalist” who was convicted of supporting al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Awlaki praised Shaea on a tape released on the Internet. President Saleh ordered the release of Shaea on Feb. 1 but he is still in jail.


Yemen

Police forcibly broke up anti-Saleh protests in Sana’a and Taiz over the weekend; 165 people have been arrested. The US will aid in the training and expansion of Yemen’s counterterrorism forces.
