Sufi Mohammed, the instigator of the Taliban takeover of the Swat Valley from 2007-2009, is to be prosecuted for crimes almost a decade old. The Taliban executed four criminals in Hangu, killed three soldiers in North Waziristan, and killed one person in a bombing outside a school in Peshawar.
The Taliban killed 20 civilians in Paktika and two ISAF soldiers in the south and the west. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Farah, Khost, Paktia, and Faryab. Twelve Taliban fighters died in a premature detonation in Faryab.
Al Qaeda suicide bombers killed 15 Iraqis in attacks on police and Shia worshipers in Diyala. Security forces killed two suicide bombers south of Mosul. Insurgents killed a civilian in Mosul.
In a press conference in Mogadishu, Ali Mohamud Rage, Shabaab’s spokesman, condemned the United Nations for speaking out against the al Qaeda-linked terror group. Rage also denounced a local radio station for reporting that Shabaab was blocking humanitarian aid to starving Somalis.
