Afghanistan

The Taliban killed three civilians in Kandahar and an ISAF soldier in the south. Security forces killed and captured dozens of Taliban fighters in Zabul, Paktia, and Faryab. An Afghan soldier killed an Italian soldier. Ten Taliban fighters surrendered in Kunduz.


Italy

The government deported convicted terrorist Lerbi Mohamed to his home country of Algeria. Mohamed, a document forger, belonged to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and was a member of cells in Naples and other areas in Italy.


The Taliban

The US government added Qari Hussain Mehsud to the list of specially designated global terrorists. Qari Hussain is the Taliban’s “master of suicide bombers” and has been responsible for numerous attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the US.


Iraq

Two suicide bombers killed 45 Shia worshipers in attacks in Karbala. Two civilians were killed in IED attacks in Baghdad and Baqubah.


Somalia

Shabaab fighters established checkpoints in Afgoye while the terror group has begun to block Shabelle Radio broadcasts. Three Somali teens escaped from a Shabaab jail in Gal’ad.

Khalid Sheik Mohammed killed US journalist Daniel Pearl, report finds




Iran

Russia cautioned the US not to undermine new negotiations with Iran by threatening more sanctions. An Iranian police chief suggested new cyber police monitor Iranians’ web activity.


45 Iraqis killed in dual suicide attacks

Shia worshipers were targeted as they marched in a procession to the city of Karbala. The attacks are the latest in a string of bombings aimed at Iraq’s security forces and Shia majority.


Denmark

Mohamed Geele, a Somali man who broke into the house of a Danish artist who had drawn cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, pled not guilty today to a charge of attempted murder. Geele used an axe during the break-in and reportedly attacked police officers with it afterward.


Canada

Mounties authorities arrested wanted terrorist Faruk Khalil Muhammad Isa in Edmonton. Isa is wanted by the US for his involvement in the murder of five US soldiers in Iraq. He facilitated the movement of eight Tunisians into Iraq and encouraged others, including his sister, to carry out suicide attacks.

Pakistan

Sufi Mohammed, the instigator of the Taliban takeover of the Swat Valley from 2007-2009, is to be prosecuted for crimes almost a decade old. The Taliban executed four criminals in Hangu, killed three soldiers in North Waziristan, and killed one person in a bombing outside a school in Peshawar.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed 20 civilians in Paktika and two ISAF soldiers in the south and the west. Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Farah, Khost, Paktia, and Faryab. Twelve Taliban fighters died in a premature detonation in Faryab.


Iraq

Al Qaeda suicide bombers killed 15 Iraqis in attacks on police and Shia worshipers in Diyala. Security forces killed two suicide bombers south of Mosul. Insurgents killed a civilian in Mosul.


Somalia

In a press conference in Mogadishu, Ali Mohamud Rage, Shabaab’s spokesman, condemned the United Nations for speaking out against the al Qaeda-linked terror group. Rage also denounced a local radio station for reporting that Shabaab was blocking humanitarian aid to starving Somalis.
