Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Jabber al Fayfi reportedly provided the information that led to the discovery of the al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula terrorism plot that involved bombs placed on cargo aircraft. Fayfi was transferred from Yemen to Saudi Arabia two weeks ago.


Somalia

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, a Somali-American, was sworn in as the country’s new prime minister. Fifteen people were killed in fighting between Shabaab and Somali and African Union forces in Mogadishu.

Insurgents killed six policemen and an Awakening leader in Baghdad, and a security guard for a political party in Baqubah. Security forces arrested 23 wanted men in Karbala and an al Qaeda “prince” in Khanaqin.




Turkey

A suicide bomber at a central square in Istanbul wounded 15 police officers and 17 civilians. A second, undetonated bomb was found near the attack. Authorities believe the radical Kurdistan Workers Party carried out the attack, as a truce with the group expired today.

Two of three men arrested yesterday in connection to a bomb threat in central Gothenburg remain in custody. The security level remains elevated and police are working closely with Sweden’s Security Service.


Thailand

Muslim insurgents killed a village chief on his motorcycle in Pattani™s Khok Pho district in a drive-by shooting. A 78-year old man was killed in a drive-by shooting while he was heading home in Yala™s Muang district. Insurgents have been blamed for the murder.


Pakistan

The Taliban killed two Pakistani soldiers in North Waziristan. A senior Taliban commander was murdered in Karachi. Security forces detained a man carrying more than 120 pounds of explosives in Mansehra.
