A Yemeni politician allied with President Saleh claimed that the al Qaeda parcel bomb plot is a US creation designed to pressure the government into allowing the US establish a base on the island of Socotra.


Iran

Security forces killed a “Wahabbi terrorist leader” in Kurdistan. The defense minister said Iran would launch a series of new intelligence satellites. Britain will increase export restrictions to Iran.

Pakistan denied US requests to expand the Predator campaign against al Qaeda and the Taliban into Baluchistan. Five Taliban fighters were killed in Swat. The Taliban bombed a girls’ school in Khyber.

Nigeria

Two worshipers were killed and one wounded by Boko Haram Islamists during an attack at a mosque during Friday prayers in the northeastern city of Maiduguri. Two gunmen driving a motorcycle taxi indiscriminately shot into a Wahabist mosque. The radical group considers Wahabism heretical.



Afghanistan

Two suicide bombers killed four people in Laghman. Security forces killed 10 Taliban fighters in Uruzgan, and captured an al Qaeda and Taliban-linked suicide operations facilitator in Nangarhar and a Taliban commander in Kandahar. ISAF confirmed that three civilians were killed during an operation in Kunar.


Germany

Security officials believe that al Qaeda and allied terror groups are actively planning a Mumbai-styled attack on the Reichstag, or parliament, in Berlin. Two terrorists belonging to the six-man cell are thought to be in the capital.


Somalia

Ten people were killed in Mogadishu during clashes between Shabaab and Somalia and African Union forces. The president of Burundi called for African nations to contribute troops and join Burundi and Uganda troops in Mogadishu.





Yemen

Saudi Prince Turki al Faisal said Yemen is a major security threat to the Saudi state. “Terrorism emerges from Yemen and crosses into the kingdom,” Faisal said. Britain said providing military and humanitarian aid to Yemen was its “highest priority.”


Iran

NATO will invite Russia to join in maintaining a missile shield designed to stop Iranian ballistic missiles. Turkey again insisted that a NATO missile shield must not focus on Iran. President Sarkozy said that Iran is the primary ballistic missile threat.
