US Predators killed four “militants” in North Waziristan. Nine Pakistanis were killed in ethnic violence in Karachi. Security forces killed eight “militants” and arrested a British national in Khyber. The Taliban attacked two NATO fuel tankers in Baluchistan.



Iraq

Insurgents killed two policemen in attacks in Baghdad and Mosul. Security forces detained 42 wanted men in Mosul and Basrah, and two al Qaeda leaders and four fighters in Fallujah and Balad Ruz.

Somalia

A suicide bomber entered the compound of the Presidential Palace in Mogadishu and detonated his vest after being shot by African Union troops; no casualties were reported. Shabaab and Hizbul Islam took over the Horn Afrik and GBC radio stations in Mogadishu.


Philippines

Suspected Abu Sayyaf Group gunmen abducted a Chinese-Filipino junk shop owner in Zamboanga City. Vinton So’s wife said the kidnappers told her it was “purely business.” A ransom demand has not yet been received. Abu Sayyaf has kidnapped three wealthy businessmen in the city this year; all were freed after a ransom was paid.


Nigeria

Police arrested two suspected Boko Haram members in Jos. The suspectes were waiting in a crowd for the arrival of the presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. One of the men admitted to being a member of a guerrilla group.

Afghanistan

Security forces killed and captured several Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, Kunduz, Khost, Paktia, and Logar. A suicide bomber killed only himself in Jalalabad. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south.


Lebanon

Hisham Awad, the son of slain Fatah al Islam chief Abdulrahman Awad, was among three Lebanese members of Fatah al Islam who were recently killed in Iraq. The other two fighters were identified as Shadi Makkawi and Khaled Afandi.


Jordan

Security forces reportedly arrested Sheikh Abu Mohammed al Maqdisi, the cleric who was Abu Musab al Zarqawi’s mentor. Two al Qaeda-linked operatives were charged in a plot to kill foreign soldiers based in Jordan.


Tajikistan

Tajikistan’s defense ministry said foreign terrorists were involved in the ambush in the Rasht Valley that killed upwards of 40 soldiers. “In addition to Tajik citizens, the terrorist group also contained militants and mercenaries including citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Chechnya in Russia,” a spokesman said.


Egypt

Security forces reportedly detained Mohammed Dababish, a senior intelligence operative for Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Dababish was involved in the murder of an Egyptian border guard as well as smuggling and other activities.


Yemen

More than 8,000 Yemenis fled the town of Huta in Shabwa province as security forces launched an assault against an estimated 100 al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula fighters. Three al Qaeda fighters were reported killed in Shabwa yesterday. President Obama’s counterterrorism adviser is visiting Yemen.


Iran

Iran’s Armed Forces Chief of Staff said the military “would inflict a heavy loss and damage” on any US forces that attacked Iran. The chief of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said the IAEA’s report was unfair and unjust. The oil minister halted gasoline imports and claimed Iran can produce enough for domestic supply.
