Iran

Tehran criticized Moscow over the cancellation of the S-300 surface-to-air missile deal. Iran’s top intelligence official identified those responsible for a terrorist attack at a military parade in Mahabad that killed 12 people: he blamed “World Arrogance.”


Iraq

Palestinian and foreign “Arab” fighters belonging to al Qaeda in Iraq were fighting in the Hadeed region in Diyala. Security forces detained 11 wanted men in Kirkuk and seized 123 roadside bombs in Mosul.


Pakistan

Security forces killed 44 “rebels” in Khyber and four Taliban fighters in Bajaur. Ten Taliban fighters and three paramilitary troops were killed in Peshawar. An Anti-Terrorist Court refused bail for three men accused of aiding the Times Square plot in New York City.

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb

The French foreign ministry confirmed that al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb’s claim of responsibility for the kidnapping of five French nationals working in Niger was genuine. AQIM claimed that it killed 19 Mauritanian soldiers during clashes in northern Mali over the weekend.

Saddam ‘delighted’ in terror attacks on US – former Iraqi foreign minister



Afghanistan

US troops killed 27 Haqqani Network fighters as they attempted to attack a base in Khost. Security forces killed and captured scores of Taliban and Haqqani Network commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Helmand, Ghazni, and Khost. The Taliban killed two civilians in an IED attack in Nimroz and an ISAF soldier in the south.




Iran

Twelve civilians were killed in a bombing at a military parade in western Ajarbaijan province. The Western powers seek an early negotiated solution on Iran at the UN. Russia announced it will not supply an anti-aircraft missile system to Iran.

The Taliban

Mullah Shamsullah, Mullah Nazir’s second in command and spokesman for the Wazir Taliban in South Waziristan, is thought to have been killed in a Sept. 21 Predator strike in Azam Warsak. Shamsullah’s death has not been confirmed.



Al Qaeda

Bekkay Harrach, a German national who is a senior member of al Qaeda’s external operations branch may have been killed in a US Predator strike in August that targeted a Haqqani Network compound. Harrach’s death has not been confirmed.


Russia

Doku Umarov, the emir of the Caucasus Emirate, relieved four Chechen field commanders of their leadership positions for their actions in attempting to pressure Umarov to step down in early August. The four commanders are Aslambek Vadalov, Tarkhan Gaziyev, Khusein Gakayev, and Arab Mukhannad.




Pakistan

The US launched two Predator strikes in South Waziristan; 26 Taliban, including Mullah Nazir’s deputy, were reported killed. The military killed eight “militants” in Kurram. Two Frontier Corps troops were killed in an IED attack in Khyber.
