Russia

A suicide bomber killed five people and wounded more than 30 in an attack on a military base in the town of Buinaksk in Dagestan. A second bomb was detonated as first responders headed to the attack scene. The driver of a Dagestani minister was killed in a car bomb attack.


Hezbollah

Israel claimed footage from an unmanned aircraft showed that a large explosion in the village of Shehabiyeh took place at a Hezbollah weapons depot. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah brushed off the government’s call for the disarming of militias in Beirut.



Pakistan

US Predators killed eight Taliban fighters in North Waziristan. The military killed 14 Taliban fighters in Kurram. The Taliban bombed a girls’ school in Kalam, destroyed three NATO fuel tankers in Kalat, and are imposing shariah in a suburb of Peshawar.


Somalia

African Union forces established nine new bases in Mogadishu. Shabaab chopped off the hands of two men accused of stealing in Beledweyn. Hizbul Islam released prisoners from Afgoi as part of a Ramadan pardon.


Afghanistan

The Taliban killed four policemen and three civilians in a suicide attack in Kunduz, three civilians in a suicide attack in Kandahar, and an ISAF soldier in the south. Afghan and Coalition forces killed and captured several senior Taliban commanders and fighters during raids in Kandahar, Khost, Paktia, and Takhar.





Yemen

Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula killed one soldier and wounded four others during attacks in the provinces of Abyan and Lahj. Nine AQAP operatives, including a local commander, were detained in Lauder. Several hundred Americans may have received training at al Qaeda camps in Yemen.






Thailand

A shootout between insurgents and Thai soldiers resulted in the deaths of one soldier and one insurgent in Yala™s Muang district. Two soldiers were also wounded in a raid to apprehend an insurgent bombmaker, Mohammad Sarai. A Muslim village chief was killed in Pattani province.

The Taliban killed 55 people in suicide attacks on a Shia procession in Quetta and an Ahmadi mosque in Mardan. A policeman was killed in an IED attack in Peshawar. US Predators killed 15 Taliban fighters in a pair of attacks in North Waziristan.


Somalia

AU force boosts size, positions in Mogadishu: official


Uganda

Mohammed Mugisha admitted to his involvement in the July 11 suicide attacks in Kampala that killed 76 people. Mugisha said he frequently traveled to Somalia to meet with al Qaeda handlers. Two more suspects, a Somali and a Kenyan, were arrested and charged with involvement in the Kampala attacks.


Iraq

Insurgents killed a policeman in Mosul and the brother of an Army colonel in Baghdad. Security forces detained four wanted men at a bomb factory in Wasit and three men for impersonating ministerial advisers in Basrah.



Afghanistan

Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban fighters and leaders in Helmand, Kandahar, Ghazni, Khost, and Logar. The Taliban killed an ISAF soldier in the south. The US said it has no plan to bail out the Bank in Afghanistan.
