Coalition and Afghan forces killed and captured several Taliban commanders and fighters in Kandahar, Zabul, Paktia, Nangarhar, Logar, and Wardak. The Taliban killed three children in Paktika and two civilians in Nimroz, and kidnapped four government workers in Kunar.

National police have killed an Abu Sayyaf Group commander and his two aides in a 15-minute gun battle at a house in Maimbung, Sulu province. The Abu Sayyaf commander, Gafur Jumdail, is the younger brother of the group’s top leader, Umbra Jumdail. Other Abu Sayyaf members may have been wounded in the raid.

Iraqi troops repelled an al Qaeda suicide assault on a Baghdad military headquarters; five suicide bombers, four Iraqi soldiers, and three civilians were killed. Security forces detained 66 wanted men in Karbala, five members of the Soldiers of Heaven in Diwaniyah, and two terrorists in Samawa.
